Korean War Armistice 63rd Anniversary Wreath Laying Ceremony

Korean War Veterans Association Quad Cities Chapter 168 will hold a ceremony to commemorate the 63rd Anniversary of the Korean War Armistice and National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day on Wednesday, July 27, at 10 a.m., at the Memorial Walkway, at the Rock Island National Cemetery. The keynote speaker will be Col. Lance Koenig, chief of staff, Army Sustainment Command. The ceremony will include a wreath laying, rifle salute, and Taps. The Korean War, which began June 25, 1950, with the North Korean army's invasion of South Korea, officially ended July 27, 1953, a day now officially recognized as Armistice Day. The signing marked the end of the longest negotiated armistice in history: 158 meetings spread over two years and 17 days. Click here for more info.

Garrison Commander speaks with local military youth

Col. Kenneth Tauke, Garrison Commander, U.S. Army Garrison Rock Island Arsenal, speaks with local area youth Wednesday, July 6, at the YMCA's Camp Abe Lincoln as part of this year's Military Kids Camp for Youth Impacted by Military Service. The six-day camp was held July 3-8 for youth ages 8-16 whose parent, sibling or other close relative serves in the military — active duty, Guard or Reserves. Activities included swimming, hiking, horseback riding, hands-on workshops, and a Military Day hosted by the Illinois National Guard.
